Organic Blueberries Just Caused an E. coli Outbreak. Here Is What That Actually Means.
Think about a car that passed its safety inspection six months ago. The sticker on the windshield is still there. It still looks official. But the inspection certified the condition of the car at one specific moment in time — it says nothing about what happened in the months between that day and today. A tire could have worn down. A brake pad could have degraded. The sticker is real. The protection it implies stopped the moment it was issued.
Organic certification works the same way.
This month the FDA and CDC began investigating a multistate E. coli outbreak linked to frozen GreenWise brand organic blueberries sold at Publix stores across eight states. Twelve people have been infected and four hospitalized. The blueberries were sourced from Chile, carried a certified organic label, and were distributed nationally. The organic certification was real. The E. coli was also real. Both things were true at the same time.
This is not an argument against organic produce. It is an argument for understanding exactly what the label covers — and what it does not.
Where E. coli actually comes from in produce.
E. coli contamination in produce can occur at any point between the farm and your table. On the farm, contaminated irrigation water is one of the most common entry points — water exposed to animal waste or sewage carries bacteria directly onto crops during watering. Wildlife passing through fields, improperly composted manure used as fertilizer, and workers handling produce without adequate hygiene are other documented sources.
But the farm is only the beginning. Once produce leaves the field, processing plants introduce new contamination opportunities — the water used to wash produce, the equipment used to handle it, inadequate sanitation between batches. During transport, temperature fluctuations allow bacterial growth. At retail, cross contamination from other products adds another layer of risk.
Organic certification covers what happened on the farm. It covers which pesticides were used and how the land was managed. It says nothing about the irrigation water source, the processing plant conditions, or what happened during the weeks of transport between a farm in Chile and a freezer in Florida.
The inspection sticker does not travel with the car.
The blueberries that caused this outbreak were certified organic. That certification was earned on a farm in San Carlos, Chile. By the time those blueberries reached a Publix freezer in Florida they had passed through processing, cold storage, international shipping, customs, domestic distribution, and retail handling. The organic label was on the bag for all of it. The certification process covered none of it.
This is the gap that exists across almost every food product you buy. A label certifies one moment and one set of conditions. The product keeps moving long after the certification stops watching.
What this means for how you think about labels.
The organic label on the blueberries was not lying. It accurately described what happened on the farm. What it could not tell you — and was never designed to tell you — is what happened at every step between the farm and your freezer.
That question — what is actually in this product right now, at the moment I am about to eat it — is the one almost no label answers. It is the question SOL exists to ask.
